The sanctuary of Shamans has been the home of the Fulni Tapuya people for more than five decades. It is located in the surroundings of the capital of Brazil, Brasilia. It used to be an environmentally protected area, situated near a large national forest.
Several families from various indigenous groups settled in this sacred area decades ago. They treasure this land where they practice their religious traditions and cultivate ancient holistic medicine.
In 2007, the local government sold the area to a property construction company. Many considered this action dubious.
The construction company now wants to build a whole new city area, while environment standards and the dignity of all these families are ignored and oppressed.
Since then, a court battle between these families and the construction company has been surrounded by controversy.
Accusations of corruption by local politicians, businessmen, speculators and government agencies are abounding.
Powerful economic interests distort and try to silence the true facts that are actually happening.
In September 2011, the Brazilian Association of Anthropology issued a report, concluding that this region should be kept as an indigenous area.
The area is covered by its original vegetation, rare flora and fauna and unique ecosystem, utmost important for global environmental preservation.
FUNAI, the federal government agency responsible for indigenous affairs in Brazil, seems to have succumbed to possible financial gains conspired by a speculative real estate market.
They are currently on the corporation’s side.
Great tension and conflict has settled in the region.
The families are surrounded by security guards employed by private contractors from the construction company.
Local students are camping on the reserve protesting to preserve the region.
Aboriginal women and children are hidden for fear of reprisals.
Harassment on indigenous protesters are reported by local media but fallen to deaf ears by the local police.
We ask for help to spread the word, as we believe that international pressure seems to be more effective than our own.
We need to embarrass our government internationally as it seems to be the only way this issue can be solved.
We want to help preserve this area and these people’s traditions and dignity.
Thank you for your help.
Disrespect against human rights in Brazil
Construction companies fight to expel indigenous from forest
The European colonization of Brazil involved slaughter and several attacks on human dignity of thousands indigenous people. That’s a sinful part of the world history which is over forever and will never happen again… Am I right? Unfortunately, not.
Scores Natives who traditionally roamed freely in the thicket have to seek refuge in Brazil from advancing guerrilla fighters, loggers and construction companies. Many people may think that it’s totally understandable, since Amazon is a big, isolated and wooded territory and it’s almost impossible to the government to supervise all the length. However, I’m not talking about Amazon now. The issue is Brasilia, a capital of modern architecture that was only constructed five decades ago.
A big area of ecological reserve in the Brazilian capital, plenty of water resources, forgotten by the government for many years, was protected by indigenous warriors against deforestation and the risk of becoming a toxic waste dump site, or a headquarter of traffickers and car thieves. It was working fine until the Brazilian State bow to real estate speculation pressure and allows the construction of a new luxury residential sector in a city which is over 2,000,000 inhabitants and planned for only 500,000 though. They have started to construct there without even notifying the Indians and now they say that the Natives are invaders and that the land never belonged to current occupants before.
This is the country that wants to be a permanent member in the United Nations Security Council. This is the county that, despite the big economic growth, still ignores the rights and environmental concerns of indigenous communities whom are often stripped of basic civil rights and face problems with authorities.
